NPTEL Ease Privacy Policy
NPTEL Ease is a browser extension that helps users copy questions and weekly lecture transcripts from NPTEL practice pages and apply answer sequences supplied by the user. This policy explains what information the extension accesses and how it is handled.
Information accessed
NPTEL Ease accesses the following information only after the user invokes an action from the extension popup:
- Web history: the URL of the active tab, solely to confirm that the current page is an eligible NPTEL page.
- Website content: question text, option labels, question images, image URLs, answer controls, NPTEL lesson metadata, public YouTube video identifiers, and captions.
How information is used
This information is used only to provide the extension’s user-facing features: copying questions, combining question images into a PNG, copying English lecture captions, and selecting or clearing answer controls according to a sequence entered by the user.
Local processing and retention
Question content, captions, and answer selections are processed locally in the browser. NPTEL Ease does not operate a data-collection server, create user profiles, retain browsing history, or store copied content. Content copied to the clipboard remains subject to the user’s browser and operating-system clipboard behavior.
Network requests and third parties
Question images may be retrieved directly from NPTEL or Google Cloud Storage. When the user explicitly requests lecture transcripts, NPTEL Ease requests optional access to YouTube, briefly opens an inactive YouTube tab that is closed automatically, and retrieves public video metadata and uploaded or auto-generated English captions. These requests are made directly from the browser; captions are not sent to the developer or retained by the extension. The “Open in ChatGPT” action requests optional access to ChatGPT and prepares a message draft. For image or mixed assignments, the generated question image is attached to the draft automatically. For plain-text assignments, the extracted question text is inserted into the draft. If the user enables “Include lecture transcripts,” available captions are inserted as additional context. After preparing the draft, NPTEL Ease waits for ChatGPT’s send control to become available and submits the prompt automatically. Content uploaded to or submitted to ChatGPT is governed by OpenAI’s privacy policy.
Data sharing and sale
NPTEL Ease does not sell personal information, use information for advertising or analytics, or share accessed website content with the developer or data brokers.
Security
The extension limits its site access to the hosts needed for its features and runs only packaged extension code. It does not download or execute remote JavaScript or WebAssembly.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when the extension’s functionality or data practices change. The effective date above will be revised when material changes are made.
